Master mentalism how to#
Regardless of how you wish to use Mentalism, it is relatively easy to get started in learning how to convince an audience of your skills as a mind reader, a memory master, or even a psychic – the basics will generally involve you learning how to read body language, spotting thought patterns and learning how to work with persuasion as well as looking for opportunities in the way people think. Of course you can! Anyone can learn the basics and develop fantastic Mentalist skills providing they are receptive and willing to learn the various techniques and behaviours to look for in people. Popular conjurers such as David Copperfield, for example, will make such tricks patently obvious to audiences alongside a plethora of other crowd-pleasing magic and tricks.

Providing you are able to perform the tricks and techniques involved, whether they be related to memory tasks, mind reading or influence, perception of Mentalism as a ‘real’ strategy or simply a series of illusions is largely down to the interpretation of the user, and how they conduct themselves with their audiences. This is the operative question – Mentalism is as real as you want it to be. However, a Mentalist who does not perform such tricks with the intent to entertain does so to try and enrich their audience’s lives, as they are performing techniques for self-improvement as opposed to for spectacle. The difference here is that a magician or illusionist will make it clear to an audience before performing – such as popular performers Dynamo and Derren Brown – that they will be performing an illusion, therefore making the audience more receptive to a trick. However, many people who use Mentalist techniques on the grounds that they are a genuine clairvoyant or savant feel that magicians who entwine such skills into a magic routine are ‘dumbing down’ – and that they should be kept entirely separate from illusion shows and the like. Hypnotism, in itself, has grown to become a popular form of therapy, which – for the most part – appears to have garnered much support and success over the years. It is this question that has divided many practicing Mentalists, as it is clear that some practicing magicians incorporate mind tricks as part of their entertainment routine, whereas others may use Mentalist techniques for serious use. Certainly, while there is no way to prove that the latter is false, there appears to be at least two schools of thought on this matter. How Mentalism works, or where such skills come from, is widely debated – while some magicians such as Derren Brown attribute their tricks to the power of psychological suggestion and body language – however, more traditional Mentalists have often attributed their skills to something more supernatural, and that their techniques were granted to them from birth. One of the most popular modern performers of this type of Mentalism is British magician Derren Brown, who continues to court legions of audiences to arena tours on a regular basis. Mentalism can start as basic as being able to read a volunteer’s mind or choice of card, and can advance to as big a scale as influencing a volunteer’s mind through the power of psychological suggestion.

This can vary from mind-reading to clairvoyancy, right through to the power of suggestion, hypnosis and even telepathy – every Mentalist’s technique is slightly different, but the aim remains the same – to convince the audience that their mind is capable of some truly extraordinary things. Mentalism is, essentially, the art of creating scenarios or situations using the mind. In fact, many have upped their game in an effort to bring Mentalism into the 21st century – but what are the basics, and why is Mentalism such an important facet of magic in general in 2016?
